In this article, I would like to tell you about my current project which is a Touch Sensor based Home automation system, built using Atmel QTouch. Atmel QTouch (AT42QT1011) are really impressive dedicated capacitive touch sensor, which don’t need any external microcontroller to operate, which reduces cost and size of products.
Before Moving Into article , I Would like to show you the demo , which I have installed in my home.
QTouch is prety easy to interface . You can find these chips from amazon.com, I have given a direct link below.
Qtouch series IC comes with Single Input(AT42QT1010), Dual input(AT42QT1011) and Four Input(AT42QT1040) formats.

The schematic is pretty simple, you can easily follow the above sch or sch in the datasheet. Only thing you need to assemble the circuit. As this comes in SMD package, you can’t directly solder to a General purpose PCB. You need to design a PCB or you can find breakout board for this online. easily available in aliexpress.
I had designed a PCB of my own, then assemble into a box. My Touch Electrode is based on PCB copper. Above that I have used thin transparent acrylic sheet with SMD LEDS and a black polyethene layer usually used in window glass to protect from sunlight.
Remeber, This IC is fully dedicated for touch application, but as always protection is the most important part of the circuit, so remember to use , Fuse, surge protection , leakage current protection , proper earthing , If you are making this for consumers.
